How do dentures work?

Dentures, in simple words, are artificial teeth and artificial gums that can be placed in your mouth and removed. The aim of dentures is to replace missing teeth. In all honesty, patients often find that it takes some time to get used to dentures and it doesn’t feel exactly like your original, natural teeth. However, with advancements in the field of science and technology, dentures today are extremely comfortable and have a natural appearance.

At Arden Park Dental, Dr. Shahnaz Formoli is known as one of the most experienced professionals for dentures Sacramento has to offer. She makes sure that her patients are informed of every choice they have, and from this, she will work with you to choose the type of denture that best suits you. There are three main types of dentures available today. They are outlined below.

Types of dentures

Conventional Full Denture

A conventional full denture, also referred to as a complete denture, is a denture that is placed in your mouth after all your teeth are removed and your tissues have already healed. In other words, it is a denture that replaces all your original, natural teeth. This means that you will be without teeth for some time until everything is healed. They can be fitted on either your top gum line or bottom gum line and are anchored using oral adhesive or by suction.

Immediate Full Denture

An immediate full denture is a denture that is placed in your mouth right after your natural teeth are removed. During a prior consultation, Dr. Formoli will take the required measurements and create a model of your jaw. With immediate dentures, a huge benefit is that you won’t have to be without teeth. However, since the bone that supports your teeth will reshape as healing occurs, your denture will become loose, requiring another visit to readjust your dentures after a few months.

Partial Denture

A partial denture is a denture that rests on a metal framework attached to your original, natural teeth. In some cases, dental crowns placed on the natural teeth are used as anchors to hold the dentures in place. These dentures are mostly used as alternatives to dental bridges if the adjacent teeth are not strong enough to support the bridge.

How to care for your dentures

Proper care of your dentures is important so as to not compromise the comfort, appearance and functionality of your artificial teeth later on. Following, we outline the tips Dr. Formoli recommends for taking care of your dentures.

  • When you are not using your dentures, always place them in a denture solution or in plain water. Make sure to never put them in hot water as they can warp because of the heat.
  • Brush your dentures carefully every day so as to remove food particles and plaque. This will, in turn, help avoid the formation of stains.
  • Before you wear your dentures, always brush your tongue, gums and palate using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Not only does this remove plaque, it increases circulation.
  • If your dentures are loosening, or are chipped or cracked, see your dentist rather than trying to fix it yourself.
