Dental Sealants in Sacramento, CA

Lowering your risk of tooth decay with preventative dentistry

Believe it or not, but even those people who regularly follow a healthy dental routine can be susceptible to tooth decay and cavities. In fact, your risk of getting dental cavities is more dependent on the structure and shape of your teeth than your eating habits. Some people may be naturally more prone to dental caries (tooth decay) despite practicing good oral hygiene, owing to an unusual dental structure and setup. However, at Arden Park Dental Care we offer the latest dental technologies such as dental sealants to help our cavity-prone customers lead a healthy and trouble-free lifestyle when it comes to their oral health.

What are dental sealants?

At Arden Park Dental Care, Dr. Shahnaz Formoli employs the use of high-quality plastic coatings that are often known as dental sealants to cover up the surface of premolars and molars. Since the natural structure of the premolars and molars consists of fissures or grooves, they are naturally more susceptible to trapping food particles and plaque and becoming decayed.

The protective coating of the dental sealants helps protect the permanent back teeth from decay and cavities, as these teeth are set deep within the jaws and are normally more difficult to clean. Also, since the dental sealants fill-up the pitted grooves of the permanent back teeth, they provide a smooth even surface covering that does not allow plaque to accumulate and decreases the chances of cavities.

Procedure for dental sealants

While this procedure is most commonly performed on children between the ages of 5-14, dental sealants can also be placed on the teeth of adults. Adults at risk of caries are likely candidates for dental sealants.

Dr. Shahnaz Formoli will first clean your teeth and then place an acidic gel on the area to be treated. The gel helps by roughening up the tooth surface and allowing the sealant to better bond with the tooth. The Doctor will rinse off the gel after a couple of minutes and dry the tooth for sealant application. The liquid dental sealant is then placed on the applicable teeth and hardened. Once hardened, the sealant becomes a hard plastic varnish coating, protecting the teeth and proving effective in helping to prevent tooth decay.
